At Internationella Engelska Skolan we strive to expose students to a broad perspective within the subjects we are teaching. In our year six and year nine groups we have been focused on atomic structure and the periodic table. Our year nines have taken a particular focus on the World’s Energy Challenges. These topics engaged our students and many of them began to question atomic theory to the point where it was relevant to open up their thinking to the idea of particles smaller than the tradition proton, neutron and electron that make up matter according to Bohr’s model of the atom.

Conceived and facilitated by STEMArts founder and new media artist, Agnes Chavez, this unique LAB combines particle physics and projection art.

To kick off the workshop students participate in the Atlas Virtual Tour with Steve Goldfarb and receive an introduction to particle physics. They then create storyboards and learn to use the projection art app called Tagtool to develop visualizations of the physics concepts. To conclude they coordinate a live projection performance for a holiday event at the Harwood museum called, Lighting of Ledoux.

Geneva

When it comes to presenting science to non-scientific audiences, you often expect this to happen in laboratories or in academic institutions, where people can observe how research is being done in real time while experts give them simplified explanations.

This year CERN decided to take a slightly different approach and took science to a place where people would not expect it to be – in a shopping centre. The POPscience project, a part of the European Researchers’ Night 2015 for the Geneva region, took place in Balexert shopping centre on the 25th of September. The programme was a unique blend of science, cinema, comics, poetry, music, games and encounters with artists and scientists.

Kathmandu, Jalandhar

ATLAS physicists Barbara Alvarez Gonzalez and Steven Goldfarb at CERN interact with students in Kathmandu, Nepal and Punjab, India. This was the first time that a collaborative virtual visit took place between CERN and two South Asian countries. The visit followed Masterclasses that were organized simultaneously in both India and Nepal. The students in each country had worked all morning measuring W bosons in real ATLAS data. During the virtual visit, they compared and discussed their results. In India, more than 70 A-level students from public and private schools in and around Jalandhar, Punjab participated in the Masterclass led by Ashok Kumar, Ashutosh Bhardwaj, Ravjeet Kour, and Suman Beri. In Nepal, Joerg Stelzer, Kate Shaw, and Suyog Shrestha led the Masterclass for undergraduate students from Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University. The two-day Masterclass was a part of Physics Without Frontiers, an International Centre for Theoretical Physics project, in partnership with CERN. The programme’s goal is to inspire students, interest them in the nature of fundamental research, encourage them to consider a science-based academic career and introduce them to CERN and high-energy particle physics.
